Acupuncture Injection Therapy

What is Acupuncture Injection Therapy (AIT)?

Acupuncture Injection Therapy (AIT), also known as as Biopuncture , involves the injection of sterile solutions such as botanicals, vitamins, and homeopathic medicines. The procedure is administered by qualified Doctors of Oriental Medicine (OMDs) with specialty training and certification in injection therapy. Like acupuncture, fine, disposable needles are inserted into traditional acupuncture points or trigger points in muscles.

What is Acupuncture Injection Therapy Effective For?

Acupuncture Injection Therapy is used for acute and chronic pain management, and may increase the benefits of your acupuncture treatment. AIT aids healing by decreasing inflammation of injured tissues. Commonly treated conditions include neck and back pain, muscle strain, arthritis, sciatica, fibromyalgia, and tendonitis.

Acupuncture Injection Therapy is often referred to as the "natural version of cortisone shots", without the risks or side effects of steroid injections.

Acupuncture Injection Therapy can be especially helpful for stubborn trigger points, which may be slower to respond to acupuncture and cupping alone. Trigger points are tight knots of muscle that never relax—they always stay tight and tense, and can become very sore. They typically form in deep muscle tissues in the back, neck, and shoulder regions. Trigger points may stem from a traumatic injury, or build up as a result of numerous micro-traumas (such as repetitive motion or overuse injuries). People with fibromyalgia often struggle with multiple trigger points as well. Not only do these trigger points hurt locally, but because muscles are connected to other muscles, tissues, and nerves, a trigger point can cause “referred pain” that radiates to other areas of the body. This can cause frequent tension headaches, jaw pain, sciatica, nerve pain, and pain in the extremities.

What substances Are Injected?

Acupuncture Injection Therapy involves small amounts of sterile injectable solutions including botanicals, vitamins, and homeopathic substances. Traumeel and Zeel are two of the more popular injectable therapies used, and contain fixed combinations of diluted plant and mineral extracts. These injectables offer a natural way to promote healing and reduce inflammation. Many patients choose to add a vitamin B12 injection as part of their treatment to boost energy, support mood, and decrease nerve pain.

Is Acupuncture Injection Therapy Safe?

AIT is a safe and effective option for acute and chronic pain relief. The solution does not contain NSAIDs, steroids, or addictive substances such as narcotics. The prescribed injectables are backed by rigorous, published research. All products are made in FDA-inspected facilities following pharmaceutical quality standards. There are no known drug interactions. Please tell your acupuncturist if you are on a blood thinner. As always, the solutions are contraindicated for any patient with a known hypersensitivity (allergy) to any of the ingredients. No studies have been conducted on children, pregnant, or lactating women.
